Dr Caroline Demarco's Recommendations
In Sydney, on the evening of the 30th April '09, Dr Caroline Demarco talked on women's health and also her experience using the Young Living Essential Oils to assist the victims of the Sumatra tsunami relief campaign. Caroline is a gentle and caring lady who has given many lectures and workshops on women's health and alternative medicine across Canada and the United States. Author of a number of books, Caroline has also written extensively for newspapers and magazines. Please see her website demarco@netidea.com for further information.
Essential Oils used successfully pre and post surgery, to
fight infection, control stress and for pain relief.
After the tsunami disaster in Sumatra, Caroline volunteered her MD services in the relief campaign. She worked with Gary Young and they used Young Living Essential Oils pre and post surgery for pain relief, to combat infection, as well as for the trauma and horrific stress of loss of family members.
The oils that Caroline prescribed most were Peace and Calming for nightmares, Valor to give strength and courage, Patchouli for stress, nausea skin rashes, inflammation, infection, high blood pressure and Listeria infection (a respiratory bacterial infection that can cause septicemia). Joy was given for its magnetic energy in assisting deep seated grief and depression and to bring joy to the heart, mind and soul. A fisherman returned to the natural disaster area to find that his wife and all of their children were gone. Hopelessness can cause a loss of vision for the future. The oil blend of Hope was used to help reconnect with feelings of strength and grounding, to restore hope for tomorrow and over come feelings of suicidal depression.
Caroline described Oregano as the cure all oil, with 60 drops in a litre of water being used for its anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Oregano was also used to get rid of unusual looking black skin rashes that people were developing in the unsanitary conditions. "We did not know what had caused these rashes" she said. "All we know is that Oregano got rid of them".
Lavender (Gary's second favorite oil - after Frankincense) was called the Swiss Army Knife because of its antiseptic, analgesic, anti convulsant, anti inflammatory, tissue healing and calming properties. When in doubt - use lavender.
Lemon oil was used extensively to wash hands, pre and post surgery and between patients, it was also used in the drinking water. Young Living provided crates of Lemon oil to the Sumatra tsunami relief appeal, as well as many other oils.
Melrose is a gentle, yet strong and effective oil blend that cleans and disinfects cuts, scrapes, burns, rashes and bruised tissue. I have found this very useful for animals and people to help cleanse and heal wounds quickly. Melrose oil reduces inflammation and bruising and helps to regenerate damaged tissue. It can be used on delicate tissue and internally. Apply first with a little V6 oil or use in a douche for vaginal itch and inflammation.
Patchouli oil was used with honey to drive infection out of the body. Patchouli is a very grounding and centering essential oil. It is high in sesquiterpenes that help to reestablish mental and emotional equilibrium and relax the mind and helps to discard feelings of insecurity, jealousy or obsessive behavior.
Oils used for pain relief after major surgery
After major surgery the pain formula used pre and post operatively was a drink made of 10 drops of Helichrysum (helps with bleeding, clots and nerve damage), 10 drops of Valerian (sedative and tranquilising to the central nervous system) and 1 drop of Peppermint oil (anti-nausea, antiseptic, cooling and enhances the effect of the other oils). Caroline said that this did not cause nausea or vomiting after surgery. Gary rubbed 10 drops of Helichrysum and Valerian three times around the incision site.
Caroline's suggestions for improving Hormonal Health - men and women.
Nutmeg for energy and hormone balance
Nutmeg oil is useful for fatigue and exhaustion and increases growth hormone. It improves energy when applied to the Vita flex area (arch of the feet), stimulating energy through its adrenal-cortex like activity on the adrenal glands. Nutmeg is a potent anti-inflammatory agent with stomach protectant (ulcers), analgesic and liver protecting qualities
Minerals needed for hormone balance
The body needs adequate minerals for balancing hormones, and for the digestion of protein to make hormones in the body. Young Living Mineral Essence is a balanced organic tonic containing over 60 different ionic minerals that help prevent disease, immune dysfunction and premature aging. Minerals are the foundation to good health and the body cannot absorb vitamins with out adequate minerals. Mineral Essence also includes essential oils that greatly enhance its absorption and bioavailability in the body. The liquid has a strong taste so squirt one or two droppers full under the tongue once or twice daily.
Alkalime for wellness
In respect of calcium absorption in the body Caroline reminded us that calcium, magnesium and other important minerals are lost when tissues in the body become toxic with acidic waste. She maintained that the contraceptive pill causes 2.7% bone loss in one year and that Depo-Provera is a very harmful drug given to women which stops menstruation and causes 6% bone loss in a year.
Read about it in A WAKEUP CALL
Increasing the body's alkalinity is foremost in overcoming illness and maintaining good health. Understanding the acid/alkaline balance is well discussed in Chapter Three of my book A WAKEUP CALL. AlkaLime is a pleasant tasting acid-neutralising powder that preserves the body's proper pH balance. Bone loss, hormone imbalance, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, allergies, Candida, parasites, urinary tract infections, indigestion, mood swings (etc) occur in acidic conditions in the body. Take one teaspoon of AlkaLime an hour before one or two meals and before bed for a better nights sleep and less mucous congestion in the morning. Eat more colorful fruits and vegetables to alkalise the body.
Hormonal balancing for women
The essential oil blend of SclarEssence helps to balance hormones naturally with phyto-oestrogen containing plants such as Clary Sage, Spanish Sage, Fennel and the soothing action of Peppermint. Take 10 to 20 drops of SclarEssence in a capsule two to four times daily, or rub three drops around the navel three times each day. This formula may assist with infertility and menopausal symptoms in conjunction with other appropriate essential oils for emotional issues. Omega Blue, NingXia Red and Longevity capsules play a vital role in helping to balance hormones.
Prostate formula for men
For prostate enlargement and lowering high PSA levels 10 drops of Frankincense, 5 drops Myrrh and 3 drops of Sage in a capsule two to four times daily.
Thyroid
The thyroid gland plays an important role in balance hormones. Sluggish thyroid function can cause infertility, PMT and irregular menstrual cycle, unexplained tiredness, weight gain, depression, dry skin, feeling cold and low morning basal temperature. Myrtle essential oil helps to balance underactive thyroid and Myrrh assists with an overactive thyroid condition. I have found that NingXia Red helps to balance thyroid hormones and is an excellent antioxidant and general tonic to female and male reproductive health. Please see my website www.nutritionandyou.com.au for further information on thyroid health.
Oestrogen dominance
Failure to ovulate effectively causes low progesterone levels and too much oestrogen in the monthly menstrual cycle. The liver plays an important role in balancing hormones and when it does not metabolise oestrogen efficiently, oestrogen can becomes a toxic substance in the body. High oestrogen levels and low progesterone create a predisposition to hormonal induced reproductive tumors, polyps, cysts and cancer. In clinical practice I have found that endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome are situations that are always related to blood sugar imbalance and high insulin levels. E-Smog especially from mobile, hands free phones, microwave ovens, computers and other electrical devices, plastics and hormones in animal flesh also upset reproductive hormones. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) a 'kidney yin deficiency' and/or 'blood stagnation' pattern frequently evident in pulse and tongue diagnosis.
One third of Australian women currently fall into the category of oestrogen dominance, the real cause being high insulin levels from too many carbohydrate foods, sugars and trans (bad) fats in the typical Western diet. In men, oestrogen dominance causes larger breasts and a stronger predisposition to prostate cancer. Clever marketing and advertising campaigns have Australian people believing that processed cereals, packet foods, microwave dinners and artificially flavoured snack foods and soft drinks are the way they and their family should eat! This is absolutely not so!! You Think You Are Eating Well is the title of chapter three in my book.
Hormone imbalance in women is poorly managed by orthodoxy, with the contraceptive pill and other artificial hormones being prescribed to induce an artificial menstrual cycle. Many women feel unwell and gain weight on the contraceptive pill. These drugs increase bone loss, can cause depression, lower self esteem and failure to ovulate following cessation of the drug. In conjunction with this, the contraceptive pill lowers B vitamin, folic acid and mineral levels in the body and puts women in a high cancer risk bracket. They do not treat the underlying symptoms to normalise the menstrual cycle. I shudder when young girls tell me that they have been put on the pill for acne, heavy periods or irregular menstrual cycle! Sensible dietary changes as described in my book, in conjunction with specific supplements to suit individual needs, will help the body to over come the "dis-ease", balance reproductive hormones, and the mental anguish, PMT and liverish symptoms that accompany this condition.
The Raindrop Technique
Caroline mentioned that she had found the Raindrop Technique to be helpful to improving hormone imbalance, and I too have found this to be very much so in clinical practice.
As always Alan and Linda Simpson livened up the seminar with their sharing and caring and happy go lucky ways. They both look younger in years than they really are. Alan had a slight hint of Myrrh and other pleasant aromas that trailed behind him. When asked about the new aroma he replied that he was wearing Myrrh and Lavender and a few other things. "It's my secret to younger looking skin" he chirped as he scurried around organising the evening's program. True to form Alan later on revealed that his secret skin ingredients were in the Young Living Clara Derm (spray). This anti-wrinkle spray, which contains Myrrh, Tea Tree, Lavender, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum essential oils, has a multitude of uses. Gary Young originally made this formula for burning and itching skin, in particular for sensitive female areas before and after child birth and for vaginal and/or candida itch.
Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is a powerful antioxidant and cleansing oil that protects delicate skin. Arabian people used Myrrh for chapped and cracked skin, stretch marks and to prevent wrinkles. Myrrh essential oil promotes spiritual awareness and is high in sesquiterpenes that stimulate the limbic system of the brain to enhance memory and hormone balance in the body. Essential oils are absorbed quickly through the skin, so it is nice to know that whereever you apply Clara Derm spray it will travel quickly through the blood and go to the areas where it is most needed in the body.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory essential oil. It is a wonderful antiseptic to assist acne, sores and inflamed skin condition.
Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) is soothing and healing to the skin, is anti-infectious and is known for its ability to heal burns and inflamed skin. Lavender relieves headache, muscle spasms and anxiety and reduces stretch marks.
Frankincense (Boswellia carter) stimulates the hypothalamus to improve immunity. It enhances DNA repair and is well known for its healing power, and ability to reduce breast cancer. In ancient times Frankincense was referred to as a cure all for every conceivable illness.
Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is calming and relaxing to the mind, body and soul. It is anti-inflammatory externally and internally in the body and used in herbal medicine to assist acne, dermatitis and eczema skin conditions.
Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) improves blood circulation and balances blood viscosity, a natural haemostat and analgesic. It is anti-viral, chelates heavy metals and stimulates optimum nerve function. Use topically for bleeding wounds, and put with Cypress oil to shrink haemorrhoids, clear spider veins and black lines.
